Es una proteína que le ayuda a los intestinos a absorber la vitamina B12. Lo producen células en el revestimiento del estómago.
El factor intrínseco se une a la vitamina B12. Después de que se adhieren, viajan hacia los intestinos para ser absorbidos por el torrente sanguíneo. La vitamina B12 es necesaria para que los glóbulos rojos se formen y crezcan.
